A Grief Support Group will begin meeting weekly on Tuesday, September 11, at 1:00 PM. If you have a neighbor, co-worker or friend who has experienced the death of a loved one recently, please let them know about this group which will be led by Dr. Mulkey. They will be using the book Understanding Your Grief.
WOMEN’S MINISTRY
Thank you to the ladies who attended our August 14th Women’s Ministry meeting and helped to review all of the 30 items on our list as well as adding new ones for the future. Upon discussion we realized that our Women’s Ministry group should focus on missions as well as fun projects. A recent mission project was Dusti Heil’s request for school supplies for residents of her apartment community, which was very successful. Another mission project, which will be chaired by Jean Batchelor, is coordinating a transportation team for widows and seniors. (See New Ministry, page 3.) Some of our fun projects will be a baby shower for Stephanie Pullin in September, a makeup demonstration in October and possibly a Halloween party. We also will revive a cookie exchange in December. We will continue to review all of the other items and plan the best time to implement them.

ON THE BOOKSHELVES
• For One More Day, Mitch Albom (author of Tuesdays with Morrie), explores the question: What would you do if you could spend one more day with a lost loved one? This is a beautiful, haunting novel.
• Those who enjoy sports and biographies will enjoy Quiet Strength, the New York Times bestseller by Coach Tony Dungy. His memoir will inspire you to take a look at the things that really matter in your own life.
• If you are feeling nostalgic, don’t miss Ferrol Sams The Passing Stories. Journey back to a simpler time to the days before America’s rural landscape began to fade. This is a quick read by a master storyteller.
MISSIONS
Back to School Supplies
Thanks to all who donated school supplies in July and August. We collected enough to fill 75 backpacks!

HUM
There is a continuing need for food for struggling families in our county. As HUM Director Troy Ray pointed out, food donations can help prevent homelessness. If one must choose between feeding his family and paying the rent, the hungry child comes first.

New Transportation Ministry
One of the things we are doing in this ministry is organizing a transportation team for those in need of transportation to medical appointments or any other special needs, such as a ride to church or any other church function. The list would be organized and kept by me and the person in need would only call me. In turn I would be responsible for contacting one of our volunteers and getting that person a ride. Anyone interested in signing up to help occasionally please call me at 761-0290 or email me jbatch1963@gmail.com

will be here by Thanksgiving?”
Yes, it is possible our new 4 classroom modular building will be in place by Thanksgiving. Your sacrificial gifts to our Building Fund are needed to make this a reality. Progress toward our goal of $60,000 may be tracked on the poster in the sanctuary.NEW HOPE 101

FILM REVIEW
The Odd Life of Timothy Green
Jim and Cindy Green are a happily married couple living in a small town. They desperately want a child but are unable to have one. One stormy night, they write down all their hopes and wishes for a child and put the many pieces of paper into a box and bury it in their garden. They are awakened that night to find a 10 year old boy covered in dirt, with leaves growing out of his ankles hiding inside their house.
This is the magical, mythical story of Timothy Green. A child who is born out of his parent's longing to love a child. Timothy is different from other children, as they soon find out. He loves everyone and isn't afraid of life. He isn't afraid to fail (such as when he joins a baseball team but ends up as the water boy because he can't play). He doesn't seem to mind being mocked and tells his parent's that" it's ok". He is optimistic and full of hope.
His parents worry about him. They don't understand why he isn't like other kids. They don't understand why he isn't competitive and doesn't fight back. They don't understand why he is content just to be himself. The other kids think he's weird. But his parents love him anyway. As Timothy the narrator explains, "The people who love you don't care if you're different".
He goes on to say, "Your parents wanted you more than anything. They make mistakes all the time. But they will keep trying to make better mistakes. In the end, you know they loved you more than you ever could have hoped for".
This film is about the brevity of life, while teaching us to do good things for others with the short time we have. It reminds us to live without fear of others finding us different, to be ourselves even when others make fun of us. To be kind when they are unkind.
I think our Lord must especially love those who are perceived as different. Those who are special, afflicted or considered handicapped. Those who don't fight back when threatened. Those who forgive their tormentors. They must remind him of his own Son. They seem to be born in His image. Most people really have to work at it.

WHAT’S COOKING?
Are you trying to eat a more healthy diet? Try this favorite of Jay and Kathy Stryker.
Kale Vegetable Soup
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3 medium carrots, sliced
3 small sweet potatoes, diced
1 large yellow onion, chopped
3 large cloves garlic, minced
2 small yellow zucchini, cubed
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon chili pepper flakes
1/8 teaspoon sea salt
1 quart low-sodium vegetable broth
1 (14-ounce) can low-sodium diced tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
2 cups coarsely chopped kale
1 (15-ounce) can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat Add the carrots, sweet potatoes, onion, and garlic, and cook until they begin to soften, about 4 - 5 minutes. Add the zucchini, oregano, chili pepper flakes, and salt, and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the broth, canned tomatoes with juice, and thyme. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer for an additional 10 minutes. Then add the kale and beans and continue simmering until the kale is wilted and the sweet potatoes are soft, about 8 - 10 minute.
Serve with whole wheat rolls and you have a simple yet satisfying meal any day of the week.
CRAFTY?
Cross-stitchers, card makers, calligraphers, jewelry makers . . . whatever your craft the Scrapbook group invites you to join them in craft evenings. Or perhaps you are compiling a cookbook of favorite family recipes or a collage of pictures as a birthday or Christmas gift. Come share ideas on Thursday, September 13 & 27. The group meets from 6:30 – 9:00 PM in the sanctuary. Any questions? See Paula Seebold.
FIFTH SUNDAY NIGHT GOSPEL SING
Sunday evening, September 30, will be our second Fifth Sunday Night Gospel Sing. There were approximately 50 in attendance at the first relaxed Gaither-type evening in July. Minister of Music Dennis Bucher is looking for members of the congregation, in addition to those in the Choir, to participate. If you would like to sing in a duet or quartet please let him know. Or if you would like to suggest favorite hymns to be included in the sing-along see him soon.
YOUTH UPDATE
THANKS
We would like to thank all of our sponsors and especially Dennis Butcher who hosted our bowling outing at Lucky’s Thursday, August 2nd. Not only did the youth have a great time, but the adult chaperones did as well!
Many thanks to Leesa Holloway for her many years of service with our Youth Group; we celebrated at Leesa’s home with a pool party and cook out. As a token of their appreciation the youth presented a scarf to Leesa.
NEW LEADERSHIP
I am stepping into Leesa’s shoes to continue the work with our Youth Group. I am looking forward to developing a “theatrical” performance for the congregation to be presented Sunday, October 14th. Tickets will go on sale September 30th.
